Raymond WoodwardBACKGROUND ON THE CITY OF CORINTH:The most celebrated city of the Roman Empire, second only to Rome itself; near to Athens, it was a planned city, rebuilt by the Roman emperors and less than 100 years old during the time of Paul; it had a free population of 200,000 and a slave population of 500,000 at the peak of its power Situated on the narrow (5 miles) Isthmus of Corinth between the western port of Lechaeum on the Ionian Sea and the eastern port of Cenchrea on the Aegean Sea; a military and commercial center and a transportation hub for both land travel (between the mainland and Greece) and sea travel (to avoid sailing 200 treacherous miles around Greece, passengers and cargo were shuttled across the isthmus and smaller boats were dragged across); a modern canal was built across in the 1800’s The host city to numerous athletic event, gladiatorial contests, theater productions and the Isthmian Games held at the temple of Poseidon (second in importance only to the Olympics, held every two years); had two theaters, an indoor one seating 3,000 and an outdoor one seating 18,000) A major center for pagan religions with more than 12 temples, including the temple of Apollo and the temple of Aphrodite (goddess of love) on the 1800 foot high Acrocorinth, which employed at least 1,000 temple prostitutes; had a widespread reputation for immorality (Greek “korinthiazomai” meant “to practice sexual immorality” - lowest accusation of the day was to call ...
