Pastor: Rev. James Bigelow
Topic: Christmas

Why I Observe ChristmasRev. James BigelowSome Christians are touchy, sensitive, and full of objections about Christmas. They don't like the holiday and often speak fervently against observing it. There is one large segment of people, in fact, that does not celebrate any holiday at all. The members of this particular group don't even observe birthdays or anniversaries. (At least they are consistent in their beliefs, although I think they have been misguided.)The New Testament teaches that the choice of observing holidays is a matter of individual conviction. It is neither demanded nor condemned. The Apostle Paul said, "One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he cloth not regard it... " (Ro 14:5-6). In other words, Paul taught that those who observe holidays should do so as unto the Lord. Those who don't observe them are under no spiritual obligations to do so, but they should not look down upon or belittle those who do. Unfortunately, those who don't observe Christmas have often been openly critical of those who do. This criticism is given despite the scripture I just read. Since "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16), even critics should give Romans 14:5-6 as much importance as any

Selected works by Rev. James Bigelow

The Danger of Getting Used to the Dark
Topic: General
Description: Spiritually, we are children of the light and of the day, but we are surrounded by gross darkness: blackness of sin, wickedness, immorality, and all manner of evil speaking; the darkness of unbelief and of false teachings. It is ironic that man has the ability to light up the heavens with artificial light, yet live in abject and dismal darkness. He can put on dazzling displays of various intensities, varieties and colors of light, yet be a wandering star to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. I believe that the depths of present-day human depravity rival that of Noah’s day before the flood, as well as the days of Lot in Sodom & Gomorrah. We are witnessing the putrefaction of man at his lowest level of morals.

The Greatness of Christ
Topic: Faith
Description: The sense of great is to be understood by the things it is intended to qualify. Great pain or wrath is violent pain or wrath; great love is ardent love; great peace is entire peace; a great name is extensive renown; a great evil or sin, is a sin of deep malignity, &c.
